is building a 30,000-square-foot data centerd on the campus of its Progresw West Health Center at the intersections of highwaye 40 and Kin O’Fallon. BJC’se facility will join existing data centerwsfor , and already located along the 40 corridor. The Nationap Information Solutions Cooperative, which providees IT consultation to rural electric cooperatives arounrdthe state, also operates a tech center in Lake St. “I think in part, this activitt is an outgrowth ofthe high-tec corridor promotional activities the and other communitie did in the mid ‘90s,” said Greg Prestemon, president and chief executive of the Economic Developmenrt Center of St. Charles County.
In addition to the region’s growing population and accessibility toa well-trained work another not-so-well known benefit of the regio is its geologic stability, Prestemon said. “These center want to be in a places thatis secure,” he said. “In the unlikelt event that there is an the high ground on Highway 40 is a good placeto BJC’s new O’Fallon data centef is scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2010. The $32.1 million facilitg will become the primary data centerfor BJC, the region’zs largest employer.
Currently, BJC’s primary data center is locatefon Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s main campus in the This building will become a backup disaster recovery data centeer once the new center is completed. Operations will gradually be transferreds from the current building to the new facility in Between 100 to 200 servers will be replaced each with the entire transition takingseveral years. “There’a a need for security and redundancy,” said Jaime Kelley, senior projectg manager with BJC Planning, Designn and Construction. “That way, if there is some catastrophic eventin O’Fallon, we have backup in the Kingshighwahy area.
” Kelley said the O’Fallob location was chosen in order to capitalizw on possible energy efficiencies between the data center and the Progresx West Health Center, a 72-bed hospital that opened in Februaryu 2007. “We decided early on that we wanted to be very conscientiousa stewards ofthe environment, and it helpsz us with energy costs as well,” she said. For a system is being developed to allowe BJC to capture heat produced by the data centerr and use it to preheat wateer forthe hospital. “Data centers are heat Kelley said. “We want to capture that and reuses the energy and create a loop between the data centetr andthe hospital.
The hospital has the and the data center has the Site work is currently under way for the data andthe facility’s design is being finalized. Arcturizs is the architect forthe project, and Clayco and Legacy are the generaol contractors. CJL Engineering is doinv engineering work. The facility will be built to meet high level sof security, in order to protect all the informationm services for BJC. It will feature a reinforcer super structure and redundancy on allthe utilities, includingh energy and cooling. “That patient data is very importantt totheir safety,” Kelley “We want to be sure that in any kind of majorf event, the data center will be protected.
” The facilitty will include a 10,000-square-foot raised flooe data area, along with additional space for meetingy areas, a conference room and a break room for The center is being builrt in accordance with LEED certified gree n building standards, with environmentally friendluy building materials and features such as bioswellx in the parking lot to channel runoff water to a stream located at a lowef elevation. The building will feature a water-chilled cooling system rather than typicalair “It will be much more efficient in its capability to cool such a heat load that a data centet produces,” Kelley said.
BJC also is buildinbg a 60,000-square-foot medical office building on the Progress West campus concurrentt with thedata center. Also along the Highwat 40 corridor, Enterprise Rent-A-Car built a 140,000-square-foot data center on Technology Drive in Weldon Springin 2007. CitiMortgage operatex a 515,000-square-foot office facility and procesas centerin O’Fallon that includez a 121,000-square-foot mission critical center with significant back-uo and redundancy. MasterCard’s WingHaven campus also includesa high-tech, high-securityg data center for its operations.
